It has been years since I read one of the books in the series, but the very beginning of the book reacquainted me with Ellie's family and situation enough so that I could recall more. This book was different than the others. It's a bit darker being about the unfortunate history of Ellie's family and all the other usual characters were off page except for a few brief appearances from Mrs. Malloy who has ceased to be amusing to me after the first couple of books. The mystery as it unravels is different too. On one hand, it's nice Cannell takes a new direction, but on the other, readers of the series aren't getting what they're expecting and probably looking for.

The story doesn't make sense to me at times. Somehow people start believing that a man was murdered but there's no investigation? No police? There are leaps in thinking about what's happening and who is doing things without evidence. On the plus side, there are lots of twists and turns, but, on the down side, shouldn't attentive readers be able to follow clues and be able to figure out whodunnit?

The story interested me enough to finish, but I definitely had issues with it. I kept asking myself when something new was revealed if it made sense.
I kept waiting for something to happen. I think I was 4 CDs into the tale which had some sort of interesting moments, but -- yawn -- what was the story? Vague hints of something interesting didn't lead to anything. Three reserved items await at the library! Mar 21, Darcy rated it did not like it. I'm always looking for new mystery authors, but this won't be one of them. I can't believe this is a series, because Ellie Haskell was so forgettable. Some of the other characters were pretty interesting, but anything quaint about them was reiterated so often it negated the charm. There wasn't even very much of a mystery about it. Give it a miss. Jun 23, DelAnne Frazee rated it it was amazing Shelves: reviewed.
Ellie goes to tell the ladies it wasn't possible as Grandmother Sophie was dead and had been for some time. Then there is Sir Clifford who is threatening to destroy the village for slights made to him as a young child. Pulling it all together is Ellie as she searches for and finds the answers, but will it be in time to save Knells? Intriguing and a bit more out there that usual but Cannell manages to keep it all believable in the end. The final reveal weaves all the threads, yet still leaves the door a bit ajar to supernatural possibilities. The story moves at a fast pace and the character are eclectic.
The humor keeps the mystery light and a story a fun read. My rating of "Bridesmaid's Revisited" is 4. Jan 07, Ann rated it it was ok. This book was first published in and is your typical classic English cozy.

They want her to visit and help save their village as a developer is forcing them to sell their home. They insist her dead grandmother wants her to help. This mystery has a few twists and turns you don't expect but it drags in many places. Jan 11, Jeri rated it it was ok Shelves: e-books , netgalley. This is the first book by this author that I have read. I was surprised to find that I didn't really care for it much.
It had the dark elements that I usually like and a good twisting mystery but I just could not get into it and find it not all that interesting to me. Unaware this was a reissue of one of a series of cozies, I was a bit confused at the beginning when hints pointed to this having been written at an earlier time Word Processor mean anything to you?

The clues were there but perhaps too subtle for me as I had not worked out all the details by the denouement. I had typed "final denouement" and then realized that would be redundant. I selected this story to read and review from Netgalley's abundant offerings both because the cover and description promised a fun book, and because it is published by Alibi, of Penguin-Random House, whose selections have been uniformly delightful, well-written, and well-edited.
I have been careful to use the American "z" in my spelling but had to concentrate as this is, in fact, a thoroughly English tale! Jan 08, Narelle Richards rated it liked it. This book was relatively well written and had moments that caught my attention but I just didn't connect with the storyline or the main character, Ellie Haskell.
She really annoyed me which prevented me from really enjoying the story as she is the person who is conveying the events of the book. I believe that this book is one that has been reissued and that there are several books that come before it which may be why I struggled with the storyline and understanding this character. While it wasn't for me and I wasn't really caught up in the mystery of it because I struggled to find the mystery, other people may find the character quite charming and the supporting cast of Ellie's grandmother's friends was quite quirky. Jun 09, EP rated it liked it. This wasn't bad, but I thought it was a weaker entry in the Ellie Haskell series. I loved the earlier books, but this one wasn't a winner for me. It couldn't capture my attention - I kept drifting away from the book, stopped and started too many times to count, and was hard-pressed to maintain enough interest to finish it which may be why I had trouble keeping track of all the characters. I think the author is gifted and I enjoyed earlier installments in this series, but this may be the end of the Ellie Haskell road for me. Thanks for the opportunity to read and review this book. I received an ARC from the publisher via netgalley.
This was a cute little mystery novel, but way too predictable. The murderer is obvious from that character's first entrance, and the fact that literally no one ever suspects that person only makes it clearer that he or she is the guilty party. The author seems to poke fun at the tropes of Gothic novels, while simultaneously filling her own book with all of the cliches of a cozy mystery. While it was a fun, quick read, it didn't hold any surprises or twists, which makes me wonder if it can really This was a cute little mystery novel, but way too predictable.
While it was a fun, quick read, it didn't hold any surprises or twists, which makes me wonder if it can really be classified as a mystery. Jul 22, Lila rated it liked it. Ellie Haskell, a fan of 18th- and 19th-century Gothic novels finds herself in one when she visits her mother's former bride's maids. I have always enjoyed reading Ellie Haskell mysteries. They are fun and funny.
Some of Ellie's personal mysteries are solved in this book of the series. The surprises are big and little. Mrs Malloy adds her down-to-earth balance to the story. You will enjoy this book. Jul 16, Mary rated it liked it. This was my first introduction to the Ellie Haskell mystery series by Dorothy Cannell. These are not great literature, but a fun summer read with some twists and turns. The characters are sort of endearing and it's just an easy get away book.
